Drug Uses
Hyzaar is indicated for treatment of high blood pressure. It may be used to decrease the risk of stroke in certain patients with high blood pressure. It may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.

How Taken
Take Hyzaar as directed by your doctor. Hyzaar may be taken with or without a meal. It is recommended to drink extra fluids while you are taking Hyzaar. Hyzaar may increase the amount of urine or cause you to urinate more often when you first start taking it. To keep this from disturbing your sleep, try to take your dose before 6 pm. Continue to take Hyzaar even if you feel well. If you take cholestyramine or colestipol, ask your doctor or pharmacist how to take it with Hyzaar.

Warnings/Precautions
Before taking Hyzaar, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if you have allergies to medicines, if you are allergic to any ingredient in Hyzaar, if you have ever had a severe reaction (e.g., swelling of the hands, face, lips, eyes, throat, or tongue, trouble swallowing or breathing, hoarseness) after taking any other angiotensin II receptor blocker or an angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor (e.g., captopril), if you are dehydrated, have low blood volume, have low blood sodium, chloride, potassium, or magnesium levels, or have high blood calcium levels, if you have asthma, diabetes, gout, heart problems (e.g., congestive heart failure), liver, gall bladder, or kidney problems, high blood cholesterol or lipid levels, or systemic lupus erythematosus, or have recently had nerve surgery, if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant or are breast–feeding. Hyzaar may cause birth defects or fetal death if you take it while you are pregnant. If you think you may be pregnant, contact your doctor right away. Hyzaar is found in breast milk. Do not breast–feed while taking Hyzaar. Some medicines may interact with Hyzaar. Therefore tell your doctor of all prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement that you are taking. Do not take Hyzaar if you are taking dofetilide or ketanserin. Hyzaar may cause you to become more sensitive to the sun. Avoid the sun, sunlamps, or tanning booths until you know how you react to Hyzaar. Use a sunscreen or wear protective clothing if you must be outside for more than a short time. Tell your doctor or dentist that you take Hyzaar before you receive any medical or dental care, emergency care, or surgery. Your doctor may have also prescribed a potassium supplement for you. If so, follow the dosing carefully. Do not start taking additional potassium on your own or change your diet to include more potassium without first checking with your doctor. Check with your doctor before you use a salt substitute or a product that has potassium in it. Hyzaar may affect your blood sugar. Hyzaar may raise your blood sugar. High blood sugar may make you feel confused, drowsy, or thirsty. It can also make you flush, breathe faster, or have a fruit–like breath odor. If these symptoms occur, tell your doctor right away. Hyzaar has not been shown to reduce the risk of stroke or certain heart problems in black patients who have high blood pressure. Hyzaar may interfere with certain lab tests, including parathyroid function tests. Be sure your doctor and lab personnel know you are taking Hyzaar. Elderly patients may be more sensitive to the effects of Hyzaar. Hyzaar should be used with extreme caution in children. Safety and effectiveness in children have not been confirmed.

Missed Dose
If you miss a dose take it as soon as you remember. However if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the Missed Dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.

Possible Side Effects
Some of the Possible Side Effects are– Back pain, diarrhea, dizziness, lightheadedness, especially when sitting up or standing, nausea, numbness or tingling of the skin, tiredness. Contact your doctor if any of these or other side effects occur. If you experience any of the following serious side effects, you should seek medical attention immediately– allergic reactions (rash, hives, difficulty breathing, tightness in the chest, swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue), chest pain, confusion, decrease in sexual ability, decreased urination, depression, drowsiness, fainting, fast or irregular heartbeat, fever, chills, or persistent sore throat, hoarseness, muscle pain, tenderness, or cramps, red, swollen, blistered, or peeling skin, restlessness, seizures, severe or persistent dry mouth, shortness of breath, swelling of the arms or legs, unusual bruising or bleeding, unusual thirst, unusual tiredness or weakness, vomiting, yellowing of the skin or eyes.

Storage
Store Hyzaar at 77 °F (25 °C). Store away from heat, moisture, and light. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep Hyzaar out of the reach of children.

Overdose
If overdose is suspected seek medical attention immediately. Some of the symptoms of Hyzaar overdose are– confusion, fainting, fast, slow, or irregular heartbeat, severe or unusual dizziness.

More Information
Hyzaar may cause drowsiness, dizziness, or lightheadedness. These effects may worsen if Hyzaar is taken with alcohol or certain other medications. Use Hyzaar with caution. Do not drive or perform other possibly unsafe tasks until you know how you react to this drug. If your symptoms do not improve or if they worsen, contact your doctor. Hyzaar should be used only by the patient for whom it has been prescribed. Do not take less or more or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor
